Springtime Dangers for Your Dog
There’s a strong argument that springtime is the most favorite out of the four seasons. With the birds chirping and flowers blossoming, it truly is a wonderful time of year. However, with all it’s beauty comes some dangers that you should be aware of when it comes to your furry friends. With the sun shining and the warmer weather approaching it means both you and your dog will be outdoors more, playing more, and yes, getting into more potential trouble. Being a dog owner is always a big responsibility, but staying alert during this time of year is extremely important!
Some of these dangers include:
Tick-Borne Diseases
One of the dangers that is most common is Lyme Disease or other tick-borne illness’. Lyme disease is a common disease that can affect both humans and dogs. Ticks often climb tall grasses or shrubs and wait for a potential host, such as your dog, to brush against so they can grab on and start feeding. It’s crucial that you check your dog for any ticks or other insects that may have jumped on for a ride while outdoors.
Spring Plants & Flowers
Another danger you should look out for are flowers and plants. As wonderful as it is to see these bulbs blossom into gorgeous picturesque flowers , they can be very toxic if your dog was to ingest them. Although not all flowers are toxic, there are some like, Tulips, Hyacinths, Daffodils, and Lily of the Valleys, just to name a few. Be sure to keep on the lookout if you and your dog are surrounded by these beauties. We’re all about an all natural diet, but your dog can wait until they get inside for their treat!
Fertilizers & Pesticides
April showers bring May flowers. It’s the time of year when people tend to their home gardens and lawns after a long winter’s rest. This means there’s a higher chance your dog will be exposed to dangers like fertilizers and pesticides. Not only can your dog ingest these toxins, but they can also get on their fur and skin. It’s important to not only be aware of what your dog is getting into, but more importantly to prepare them to help avoid the damage they could cause. Musher’s Secret Dog Paw Wax is a perfect way to protect these toxins from seeping into your dogs paws. For year round protection, we suggest applying a thin layer 2-3 times a week and rub it in. It will absorb in a few moments and even better, once Musher’s has absorbed it will NOT come off on floors, carpeting or clothing!
Outdoor Adventures
In general, this time of ear means you will be spending a lot more time outdoors with your furry friend. Playing at a dog park, exploring new trails, nice long night time walks, etc. These are all great activities for your dog, however, it is key to prepare them and their paws for these types of adventures. Be sure wherever you go that your dog is capable of handling whatever strenuous activity you choose and won’t tire out too fast. It is also important to continue to apply your Musher’s Secret Dog Paw Wax to protect them from rough or hot surfaces, general over use, and other cuts or cracks they may be experiencing after a long winter.
If you have any specific worries or questions about what else can be a potential threat to your dog this Spring we suggest contacting your local veterinarian for more specific guidance to help your pup. Now, who’s ready to SPRING into new adventures this season?!
